The Complete Sydney Moving Checklist: Your 4-Week Countdown

Clipboard with ticked checklist resting on a cardboard moving box

Moving house is a project, and projects go smoothly when the work is spread out instead of crammed into one chaotic weekend. This is the exact countdown we’d give a friend moving in Sydney — week by week, from four weeks out to the day after you move in. Save it, share it, and work through it top to bottom.

4 weeks out: lock in the big pieces

  • Book your removalist. End-of-month dates and weekends book out first in Sydney — lock your date now. (Wondering what it should cost? Read our Sydney removalist price guide.)
  • Give notice on your rental. Check your lease for the required notice period and give it in writing to your agent or landlord.
  • Declutter before you pack. Every box you don’t move is money saved. Sort into keep, sell, donate, and council cleanup — and book the council pickup early, slots fill fast.
  • Order boxes and materials. We deliver packing boxes priced per unit — order more than you think you need; unused flat boxes are easy to return or reuse.
  • Start eating down the freezer. Four weeks is exactly how long it takes to empty a full freezer without waste.

3 weeks out: start the slow pack

  • Pack the rooms you don’t live in. Garage, spare room, bookshelves, off-season clothes. Aim for a few boxes a day — not a marathon.
  • Set up a labelling system. Room + contents + ‘OPEN FIRST’ where it applies, written on the side of the box, not the top (you can’t read the top in a stack).
  • Book time off work for moving day and ideally the day after.
  • Living in an apartment? Book the lift. Strata buildings need the lift reserved and often a common-property protection form. Our apartment moving guide covers what your building manager will ask for.
  • Sort school and pet logistics. Request school record transfers; plan where pets spend moving day — a friend’s place beats a house full of open doors.

2 weeks out: utilities and address changes

  • Connect utilities at the new place — electricity and gas active from the day before you move in.
  • Book your internet connection now. NBN connections at a new address can take two weeks or more — this is the single most common ‘wish I’d done it earlier’ item.
  • Schedule disconnections at the old place for the day after you leave.
  • Redirect your mail with Australia Post — start it from moving day.
  • Change your address with the essentials: driver licence (Service NSW), Medicare, banks and cards, insurance policies (car, home, health), electoral roll, super fund, and subscriptions.

1 week out: pack almost everything

  • Pack everything except daily essentials. By the weekend before, you should be living out of a suitcase.
  • Pack your first-night box: kettle, chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, sheets, towel, toilet paper, scissors, and snacks. It travels in your car — never in the truck.
  • Disassemble what you can. Beds and tables come apart faster with screws bagged, labelled, and taped to the furniture they belong to.
  • Confirm the details with your removalist — arrival window, access notes, parking at both ends, stairs, and any heavy items. (Booked with us? You’ll get a confirmation covering all of this. Not booked yet? Get a quote — it takes two minutes.)
  • Plan truck parking at both addresses — reserve a spot with your building or leave your own car holding the space.

48 hours out: the final sweep

  • Defrost the fridge and freezer — 24–48 hours before the move, with towels down.
  • Finish the last boxes — kitchen and bathroom go last and open first.
  • Keep valuables and documents with you: passports, jewellery, hard drives, cash — in your car, not the truck.
  • Charge everything and set an early alarm.

Moving day

  • Do a final walkthrough — every cupboard, the dishwasher, the oven, behind every door, the garden shed.
  • Photograph the empty rental room by room, plus the electricity and gas meters at both properties — your bond and your bills will thank you.
  • Hand over keys as your agent instructed, and count the set for the new place.

The day after: land softly

  • Unpack in order: beds first, then bathroom, then kitchen. Everything else can wait.
  • Book the end-of-lease clean at the old place if it isn’t done — it’s the difference between a full and partial bond refund.
  • Finish the address changes you didn’t get to, while the redirect catches strays.
  • Meet the neighbours. You’ll want to know them the day a parcel goes missing.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a removalist in Sydney?

Two to four weeks for weekday moves; four or more for weekends and end-of-month dates, which book out first. Left it late. We also do same-day removals.

When should I book my internet connection?

At least two weeks before moving day. NBN activations at a new address are the most commonly delayed utility, and working from home without internet is a bad first week.

What should I pack first when moving?

Rooms you don’t use daily — garage, spare room, books, off-season clothes. Kitchen and bathroom are packed last and opened first.

Do removalists disassemble and reassemble furniture?

We do — beds, tables, and wardrobes are part of the service. Anything you disassemble yourself in advance saves paid time on the day.

What goes in a first-night box?

Kettle, chargers, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, bed sheets, a towel, toilet paper, scissors and snacks — carried in your own car so it’s never buried in the truck.
