The Day After You Move In: A Practical Checklist

Open front door with moving boxes visible inside a sunlit hallway

The truck’s gone, the boxes are (mostly) in the right rooms, and the adrenaline of moving day has worn off. Here’s what’s actually worth doing the next day, and what can reasonably wait.

Partially unpacked living room filled with sunlight

Safety first

Before anything else:

  • Locate the fuse box / circuit breaker and hot water system
  • Test smoke alarms if you haven’t already confirmed they’re working
  • Locate main water and gas shut-off points, just in case
  • Check all external doors and windows lock properly

Check your utilities are actually working

Test power, water, gas and internet if they were meant to connect around your move date — see our guide on making sure your utilities are connected properly if anything’s not working as expected. It’s much easier to chase up a missed connection on day one than a week in.

Unpack with a priority order, not randomly

Don’t try to unpack everything at once. A sensible order is: kitchen basics, bathroom, bedroom, then everything else over the following days. If you packed a first-night box, you’ve already got the true essentials covered — the rest can happen at a reasonable pace.

Get your bearings

  • Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy and GP if you don’t already know the area
  • Note down building/strata contact details if applicable
  • If you have a garage or shed, get a general sense of what’s stored where before it gets buried under more boxes

The admin that can wait a few days — but not too many

If you haven’t already worked through your change-of-address checklist, the day after you move in is a reasonable time to start — but it doesn’t all need to happen in the first 24 hours. Spread it over the first week rather than trying to do it alongside unpacking.

What can genuinely wait

  • Full unpacking (weeks, not days, is completely normal)
  • Hanging artwork or mounting anything permanent
  • Reorganising storage areas properly
  • Getting to know every neighbour

Settling in properly

The first day after a move is about function, not perfection — safety checked, utilities working, essentials unpacked. Everything else has time. If you’re still planning an upcoming move, get a quote and we’ll help make sure moving day itself sets you up for an easy first day after.

Frequently asked questions

What’s actually urgent the day after moving in?

Safety basics (smoke alarms, locks, knowing where the fuse box and water shut-off are) and confirming your utilities are actually working. Everything else has more flexibility.

Should I unpack everything on day one?

No — a priority order (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, then everything else) works far better than trying to empty every box at once. Full unpacking over a week or two is completely normal.

What safety checks are worth doing early?

Locating the fuse box, hot water system, and main water/gas shut-offs, plus testing smoke alarms and checking that doors and windows lock properly.

When should I get around to updating my address everywhere?

Spread it over the first week rather than doing it all on day one — Medicare and your licence are worth prioritising, with the rest following over the following days.

What can genuinely wait a week or more?

Full unpacking, hanging artwork, reorganising storage, and getting properly settled into the neighbourhood. None of it needs to happen in the first 24 hours.
